<p>Back and neck pain are the chief complaints for which patients seek chiropractic help. Through manual spinal manipulation, chiropractic care is a holistic therapy that focuses on maintaining healthy musculoskeletal and nervous systems to ensure overall wellness.</p>
<p><em><strong>Effectiveness</strong></em></p>
<p>The research about chiropractic care is growing. According to the <a href="http://www.annals.org/"><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><span style="color: #0000ff;">Annals of Internal Medicine</span></span></span></a>, recent studies show that spinal manipulative therapy performed by a chiropractor, along with exercise, relieve neck pain more effectively than medication.</p>
<p>Furthermore, the <a href="http://www.jmptonline.org/"><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><span style="color: #0000ff;">Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics</span></span></span></a> reported that an integrated approach to health care &#8212; including chiropractic care &#8212; results in a 51.8 percent reduction in pharmaceutical costs and 43 percent fewer hospital admissions.</p>
<p>You should consider seeing a chiropractor if you experience frequent pain in your back, neck or joints, as well as headaches. This is especially so if intense soreness follows accidents, household chores or prolonged periods of poor posture.</p>
<p><em><strong>Back and neck pain</strong></em></p>
<p>Chiropractors are best known for safely and effectively treating acute back and neck pain, as well as headaches. Whereas a medical doctor might prescribe pain medicine, muscle relaxers or anti-inflammatory drugs, and an orthopedic doctor might suggest surgery, a chiropractor will treat your back problems by hand, through manipulation of the spine.</p>
<p>Nancy Elwartowski-Cooper, a pediatric and prenatal chiropractor, sees more and more referrals from medical doctors: &#8220;They (patients) are tired of the drugs and want answers to what is causing their problems.&#8221;</p>
<p>Chiropractors bring the musculoskeletal structure into proper alignment. Chiropractors change the position of your body and apply pressure to particular points along the spine that are not properly aligned. This results in a popping noise similar to the one created when you crack your knuckles. The noise is created by a change in pressure in your joints as gas bubbles are released.</p>
<p>By adjusting the spine with their hands at particular pressure points, chiropractors unblock nerve energy and allow it to flow better down your spin and throughout your entire body. Repeated visits can, over time, realign your spine to optimize overall health.</p>
<p>Chiropractor Brian Elwartowski said the brain sends messages down the spinal cord and out through the nerves to the rest of your body. If certain nerves are squeezed by a twist in the spine, they won&#8217;t function as well as if they were straight. &#8220;Chiropractic [care] allows the nerves to work at their most optimum ability,&#8221; he said, &#8220;allowing the body to heal at its optimum ability.&#8221;</p>
<p><em><strong>Treatment plan</strong></em></p>
<p>Many chiropractors seek to care for the whole person, from general wellness to disease prevention. They examine every patient, not only for the reason of their visit but also their level of health. After diagnosis, a chiropractor develops a treatment plan.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.acatoday.org/content_css.cfm?CID=2163/lOverland"><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><span style="color: #0000ff;">Keith Overland</span></span></span></a>, president of the American Chiropractic Association, said, &#8220;This may include combinations of chiropractic manipulation, physical therapy and rehabilitative procedures for many musculoskeletal problems.&#8221;</p>
<p>Some chiropractors provide nutrition advice, exercise recommendations, ergonomic and lifestyle counseling and so on. The successful management of chronic conditions may require a combination of these major components. This holistic approach can reduce the need for potentially addictive pain medication or invasive surgery.</p>

<p>Why Should Children Have Chiropractic Care?</p>

<p>More and more parents are seeking chiropractic care for their children. .Many spinal problems seen in adults began as early as birth. Even so called &#8216;natural&#8217; birthing methods can stress an infant&#8217;s spine and developing nerve system. The resulting irritation to the nerve system caused by spinal and cranial misalignment can be the cause of many newborn health complaints. Colic, breathing problems, nursing difficulties, sleep disturbances, allergic reactions and chronic infections can often be traced to nerve system stress.</p>
<p>Since significant spinal trauma can occur at birth, many parents have their newborns checked right away. As the infant grows, learning to hold up the head, sit, crawl and walk are all activities that affect spinal alignment and are important times to have a child checked by a Doctor of Chiropractic.</p>
<p>As the child begins to participate in regular childhood activities like riding a bike, dance or gymnastics, small yet significant spinal misalignments (subluxations) may occur. If neglected, the injuries during this period of rapid growth may lead to more serious problems later in life. Subtle trauma throughout childhood will affect the future development of the spine leading to impaired nervous system function. Any interference to the vital nerve system will adversely affect the body’s ability to function at its best.</p>
<p>One of the most common reason parents seek care for their child is trauma from an injury of some sort. These misalignments may or may not result in immediate pain or symptoms. Regular chiropractic checkups can identify potential spinal injury from these traumas, make the correction early in life and help avoid many of the health complaints seen later in adults. Proper spinal hygiene is an important key to better health.</p>
<p>Another sought out reason for care is the resolution of a particular symptom or condition. Parents seek care for conditions such as colic, ear infections, asthma, allergies and headaches (to name a few) because they have heard from other parents that chiropractic care can help.</p>
<p>It is important to understand that the doctor of chiropractic does not treat conditions or diseases. The expertise of the chiropractor is in checking the child’s spine for misalignments that impair nervous system function therefore affecting overall body function. The bones of the spine, the vertebrae, house and protect the spinal cord. The spinal cord is an extension of the brain and carries information from the brain to the body parts and back to the brain again. Subluxations interfere with the nerves’ ability to transmit this vital information.</p>
<p>The nerve system controls and coordinates the function of all the systems in the body: circulatory, respiratory, digestive, hormonal, eliminative and immune system. Any aspect of health may be impaired by nerve interference. The chiropractic adjustment restores nerve system function allowing the body the ability to express a greater state of health and well-being.</p>
<p>The doctor of chiropractic will take a case history and perform a chiropractic exam to determine if spinal subluxations exist. Chiropractic adjusting procedures are modified to fit a child&#8217;s size, weight, and unique spinal condition. They are both gentle and specific to the child’s developing spinal structures. Most parents report that their children enjoy their chiropractic adjustments and look forward to subsequent visits. They also report that their children experience a greater level of health while under regular chiropractic care.</p>

<p>Begin lying on floor facing up.<br />
Bend knees so feet are firmly on floor.<br />
Extend arms upward toward ceiling.<br />
Activate core muscles.<br />
Lift hips off floor to attain a bridge position with knees, hips and shoulders in alignment.<br />
Slowly return to start position.<br />
Repeat for prescribed repetitions and sets.</p>
<p>Initially, you may develop some cramping in the back of your thigh.  A simple hamstring stretch before and after may prevent this from occurring.<br />

Recently I had the great honor of spending a day with Lance Armstrong’s Chiropractor, Dr. Jeff Spencer.<br />
As the team doctor for 8 Tour De France winning teams, Dr. Spencer shared intensely valuable insights about whole food nutrition support, and the importance of structural freedom, that I would like to share with you!<br />
There are 4 areas of nutritional support that you could be addressing and there are specific nutritional products for each area.<br />
1- BASIC NOURISHMENT<br />
In terms of nutritionally enhancing your basic systems: your brain, your circulatory system, your stress response, your digestion, anti oxidation and managing the inflammatory process and supporting your energy production at a basic level. How you handle your foundational needs (which Dr. Spencer refers to as &#8220;The Rock&#8221;) from a nourishment point of view, is crucial. <p>Begin lying on your back.<br />
Extend arms above head flat on floor.<br />
Activate core and lift knees above hips and maintain a 90/90 hip and knee position.<br />
Activate core.<br />
Lift one arm off the floor and raise it towards ceiling until above shoulder level while simultaneously extending one leg downward towards floor.<br />
Pause momentarily.<br />
Return to start position, alternating sides.<br />
Core activation should be maintained throughout entire exercise.<br />
Repeat for recommended repetitions and sets.</p>
